Abstract
A case of acute puerperal uterine inversion is described in a patient who presented
to the emergency department after a home birth and a prolonged third stage of labor.
The cardinal findings were shock and excessive blood loss. The uterus and attached
placenta were protruding from the vagina and the normal cervical landmarks were absent.
Emergency management consisted in vigorous fluid resuscitation prior to transfer to
the operating room for definitive reversion.
